Exercising to burn off belly fat
Are you trying to burn off belly fat, exercising like crazy, and getting nowhere?

A lack of sleep

A study was done by the Annals of Internal Medicine, funded by the National Institutes of Health in America (NIH), over a period of two weeks. The subjects were 10 overweight adults, 3 women, and 7 men. The group had an average age of 41 and none of them smoked.
One subgroup of 5 was allowed only 5.5 hours of sleeping time while the rest were allowed 8.5 hours.
The results showed that the test subjects who were allowed 5.5 hours of sleeping time, lost 55% less body fat than those allowed 8.5 hours.
The group allowed less sleep lost 60% more fat-free body mass.
The group getting less sleep got hungrier than the others.
Common reasons for not sleeping well
Stress, too much coffee, etc., may contribute to a poor night’s sleep, but alcohol may be worse.
Alcohol may get you to sleep quickly but it will often cause you to awaken in the middle of the night and sleep no further.

A heavy meal in the evening can also cause problems.
It’s important to get to bed on time.
An answer to my problem
The research had its limitations but gave me a possible answer.
Although the number of subjects was relatively few, the research period relatively short, it did have a possible answer to a question that had me baffled for several years.

What happens to fat when it is burned?
A few years back I saw a children’s educational TV program. In conclusion, it was stated that 85% of lost fat is breathed out as carbon dioxide.
Although I was surprised having never heard of such a thing, it seemed plausible when I considered what happens to gasoline/petrol when it was burned.
After I began writing this I went looking for more information to corroborate with what I saw on the kids’ program.
I found an article in an online publication called Science Daily. The article, published December 16, 2014, was based on material from the University of New South Wales.
Professor Brown (co-author with Meerman) affirms that out of every 10 kg of lost fat, 8.5 kg turns into carbon dioxide while the remaining 1.5 kg comes out in bodily excretions such as sweat and urine.
“None of this is obvious to people because the carbon dioxide gas we exhale is invisible,” says Mr. Meerman.
More than 50 percent of the 150 doctors, dieticians, and personal trainers who were surveyed thought the fat was converted to energy or heat.
“This violates the Law of Conservation of Mass. We suspect this misconception is caused by the energy in/energy out mantra surrounding weight loss,” says Mr. Meerman.
Consider: E=mc². If all of your fat was converted to energy, you’d blow up the world.
An increased heart rate increases oxygen intake
You can’t just breathe more or faster just to take in more oxygen. You’ll only succeed in hyperventilating.
Work needs to be done to increase your heart rate.
The increased heart rate gets the oxygen to where it is needed quicker, and increased muscle mass means that more of the oxygen will be used to burn a greater amount of fat.
To burn 1 kg of fat around 3 kg of oxygen is needed (British Medical Journal, 2014). As the air cools its density increases affording people more oxygen with every breath.
A cool well-ventilated bedroom will help you burn more fat while you’re sleeping
Higher oxygen content in the air you breathe while sleeping will also cause you to lose more weight while you’re sleeping.
When the air is cooler the concentration of oxygen is higher.
In the wintertime, plenty of blankets are a much better option than artificial heating which also produces CO2, while taking oxygen out of the air.
The room needs to be ventilated to replenish oxygen and keep exhaled CO2 at the bottom of your room’s air volume.
Raise your muscle mass through weight training

This helps build muscle mass, and muscle tissue burns more calories — even when you’re at rest — than body fat.
According to Wharton, 10 pounds of muscle would burn 50 calories in a day spent at rest, while 10 pounds of fat would burn 20 calories.
The best way to increase muscle mass is to incorporate some weight training into your workout routine.
If your planning to begin weight training, or indeed any kind of regular exercise, starting small is key, especially as you get older.
If you go too hard too early, you may be forced to stop because of
- Muscle soreness
- Muscle injury
- Joint pain caused by inflammation
