Deep-country-camping could be the perfect social distance vacation this year. As restrictions begin to ease the possibility of an outdoor adventure, perhaps, is beginning to loom large in the minds of potential holidaymakers, and there is probably nothing safer than deep-country-camping, where you can forget about the hassle of social distancing for a while.

If you live in Australia there is still time to work on your fitness before spring arrives. Northerners still have plenty of time before the cold months come.

Planning

Deep country camping requires a little research and planning beforehand. Your destination should have a source of water. You don’t want to be lugging water.

The alternative would be going in a 4WD.

Make sure you take a compass if you are going anywhere that is heavily wooded.

Mootwigee, 70 miles north of Broken Hill in far western NSW, Australia has to be my favorite destination. It has interesting rock formations and rock pools, in the middle of harsh dry, almost desert country.

Location

So hot! Time for a swim at Mootwingee.

Ideally, the hike to the campsite should be just long enough to push civilization out of sight, and out of mind.

You might drive and park, or get dropped off. Or to heck with it,  just drive into where you want to go.

You may even elect to go in as the sun is setting in order to get that extra night.

Once your plan begins to take shape, you’re going to have to check that you have the necessary equipment. In other words, Be Prepared!

To help, I’ve come up with a few things that will make deep-country-camping and hiking as easy and fulfilling as possible.

The MH 11 has all the light you could need

Setting up in the dark

Let’s say there is a chance you will be setting up camp in the dark. Well here is just the thing.

At 750 lumens on full power, The Ledlenser MH 11 headlamp is very powerful and its host of functions can be customized using Bluetooth. Best price on eBay AU $249.95

  • The brightness of the MH 11 can be cranked up to 750 lumens lighting a distance of 300 m and has a 10-second boost feature to give you 1000 lumens for when you need clarification or to see further.
  • For close-up purposes, 120 lumens is all you need
  • Using the optisense control in the app you can program the headlamp to adjust to surroundings to avoid glare making it good for reading and closeup work.

Different Colored Light Feature

  • Blue beam: less likely to disturb the fish and is good for reading maps and charts.
  • Red-beam: this allows you to maintain night vision so that you will still be able to notice things in your peripheral vision that are being illuminated by moonlight – when hunting for example.
  • Green-beam: The fog penetrator. Penetrates fog without the reflected glare of white light. Makes fog obscured shapes sharper than white light does.

AU $257.02

One of the many clever features built into this headlamp is its blue light function. It’s great for fishing at night because it’s less likely than white light to disturb the fish.

The blue light can also activate fluorescence in some fish making them easier to see.

Blue-light/fishing function

While most fishing is done under natural light there is a lot to be said for fishing at night.

Apart from the charm and peace that comes with the solitude, fishing spots that have been fairly average during the day can become much more exciting at night.

Nighttime can bring out the monsters hunting under the cover of darkness.

Fish that are vulnerable to bird strikes, not seen in clear shallow water during the day, do not have to fear this at night.

During the tourist season, popular spots may become crowded during the day, but most holidaymakers pack up and are gone by nightfall.

The Ledlenser Connect App

Ledlenser Connect app can be downloaded to your cellphone. You can have up to 8 customized settings for 8 different scenarios.  Your cell phone interacts directly with the MH 11.

Headlamp Strobe Function

Activated through Bluetooth the strobe function is a good warning signal while changing a car tire on the side of the road at night, or attracting attention in large open public places, or even for self-defense because it has a strobe function.

SOS

product review image

Mountain trek, mountain woodlands? You may need an SOS.

Also activated through the app, the MH 11 can send out an international SOS alert in case of an emergency.

A great thing to have if you get lost or injured.

Extra security as you venture forth.

The headlamp is lightweight

It’s very light weighing 179g, the equivalent of just over one-third of a 500ml bottle of water, which means comfortable, much more so than the cap lamp and hard hat I had to wear underground every day a mile underground in Broken Hill.

The lens diameter is only 39.5mm.

The headlamp’s interval and alarm function

The Ledlenser Connect app allows you to set your headlamp like an alarm clock. The light will activate at the time you set and it can be set to come on gradually. Similarly, it can be programmed to fade off gradually when used for reading at night, getting to sleep on time.

The app can also be used to blink at intervals set by you. You can have it blink once at the end of the first interval, twice at the end of the second, and so forth, a little bit like have a personal trainer. Your headlamp will continue to shine throughout the session.

Manual Control

  • Travel lock: this will prevent accidental activation and the loss of battery life while in transit.
  • Advanced focus system: the MH 11 app can also be used to zoom from floodlight to spotlight.
  • You can manually adjust the angle of the beam through 120º. The focus can also be adjusted manually and there is an on-off button.

Recharging is simple, the MH 11 has a magnetically connecting recharge system. It charges the lithium-ion battery giving you a running time of 4 hours without using the power saving options. There is also a low battery warning, letting you know when it’s time to recharge or change batteries.

The charging cable connects magnetically to the headlamp. Replacement cables can be purchased directly from Ledlenser.

  1. When I go hiking I do make it a necessity to make sure I have everything I need to make the experience worth a while. It is very important to never forget a map and a compass and I also think including a hiking watch is just as important. During these times we live in going for a hike might just be an ideal activity to distance ourselves from the city. Of course we can’t spend all of our lives there but we can pick days to do this as it acts as a form of keeping fit and also staying away from everything happening in town.

  2. I really love seeing people who travel together as I love traveling with my best friend and family about the place, but the pandemic hasn’t been really helpful at all in that regards as we all have to stay home without having to travel. However social distancing on vacation seem funny but if it goes well, I would love to travel soon

    1. Hi Justine.

The whole point would be to get away from the rules and regulations and forget these troublesome times for a while.

It would be a good opportunity to clear your head and think clearly, and enjoy some peace.

Thank you very much for your input.

      Kind regards,

      Garry

  3. Well this might actually be awkaward at first but with proper planning and all, it would definitely be another worthy camping experience. I actually like the idea of going camping while still ensuring to maintain the distance rule and to make sure we stay safe by preventing too much contacts. This is really a good ones dn I would try this out with my colleagues, if they approve.

    1. Hi Kimberly, I have always thought that social distancing and lockdowns are a waste of time and do more harm than good since the world’s death rate is less than 4%.

I think that the virus has caused the biggest outbreak of fuckwittery the world has ever seen.

      Go camping. Forget the rules.

      Garry.
